The Diva Takes On Zingerman's Famous Reuben Sandwich!

Hey divas, as I blogged earlier this week, Kuzak's brother and the Chicago Foodie gifted us a Zingerman's Reuben Sandwich kit! Well, like I promised, I'm here to share with you the pleasure I had constructing the sandwich, following Zingerman's strict guidelines, and then noshing on it. All I can say is that Zingerman's does not disappoint!

After heating half of the loaf in my oven at 350 degrees for 20 minutes and also warming the lean corned beef in the oven, I constructed the sandwiches by cutting one inch thick slices of bread, brushing them with olive oil, layering them with Russian dressing and Swiss cheese. Then, I grilled the bread until the cheese melted, removed them from the pan, and piled on the corned beef and coleslaw. Finally, I sliced them down the middle at an angle, as instructed, and served them with the included potato salad and pickles. Whew!

In case you're wondering, it was well worth the effort once I sank my teeth into the sandwich. The bread alone - crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside - is mind-blowing. When combined with the classic reuben ingredients, it's a heavenly sandwich, among the very best I have ever had. I made another one for lunch today, and I still have leftovers for more. If you're looking for something special, give Zingerman's sandwich kits a try!

  1. Hello there, Diva!

My name is Brad and I'm part of the marketing and product selection team at Zingerman's Mail Order (the ones that sent you the Reuben Kit). I'm also a former Sandwich Line cook (at Zingerman's Deli) and the one that put together the sandwich construction instructions.
Just wanted to let you know that your sandwich looks absolutely perfect (not to mention delicious)!
If you ever decide to put your Harvard degree on hold and get yourself elbow deep in Russian Dressing, I think we could use you on the sandwich line! Really great work!

  2. Brad-

That is high praise, especially coming from an expert like yourself! Thank you so much - your comment has totally made my day, because I must confess I was a little nervous making the sandwich as I knew I had big shoes to fill. Your instructions were fantastic! If you like the blog, please feel free to share it with others. I'm hoping to make it to Zingerman's in person in July, and I promise to blog that, too!

And you never know, I just might take you up on your offer to work on the line one of these days!

    xoxo
