New Restaurant Opening: Son of a Gun Holds Up L.A.'s Third Street

Son of a Gun is the best restaurant to hit L.A. in a long time.

The brand new seafood eatery from Animal chefs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo has only been open four weeks, but it's already firing on all cylinders. On Sunday night, I hijacked the communal table with a coterie of friends (for a birthday celebration) and chowed down on some of the best food that I've tasted this year. As much as I adore Animal, they may have outdone themselves with this place.

While Son of a Gun, with its nautical themed interior, may be advertised as a seafood joint, what they're really serving up is thinly disguised comfort food -- lobster rolls with butter brioche and a sprinkling of potato chips, fried chicken sandwiches in the vein of dressed-up Chick-fil-A, a brandade dish that's essentially a bowl of salt cod infused mashed potatoes with a soft poached egg on top. This dish was hands down one of the favorites of the evening -- it had me licking the bowl by the end.

Brandade
Oh, and did I mention the succulent king crab legs swimming in Tabasco-butter? Simple, but also one of the best things that I've ever tasted.

King Crab Legs
All the food is served family style, which make for a fun dining experience, especially over the long and roomy communal table (a big boon since reservations are tough to score).

Fried Chicken Sandwich
Drinks range from specialty cocktails, to beer and wine (I highly enjoyed the Gruner Vertliner by the glass, and it paired well with most of the food). Despite the recent opening, the service was top notch, with the staff managing our rowdy party, explaining a complicated menu, and spacing out the food service at nice intervals.

Frozen Lime Yogurt
While desserts are clearly not the focal point of the menu, the frozen lime yogurt with graham cracker crumble and toasted meringue was a refreshing and light way to end a decadent meal.

This is a must try dining destination. I loved my dinner so much, that I'm going back in a few days. And once they start lunch service, I'll be there even more...
